What is Balanced Diet?
A Balanced Diet is one, which provides all the necessary nutrients required by our body in order to perform all the necessary functions properly in appropriate quantity and proportion. It comprises of a variety of food items to provide suitable nutrition to the body for its healthy growth and functioning.
Why is it important?
Our body is composed of tissues which need specific nutrients in defined quantity in order to grow and perform their function properly. Lack of proper nutrition leads to low resistance against diseases or infections and fatigue or tiredness. It leads to growth and developmental problems among children which leads to poor performance on both physical and academic fronts. This lack of achievement leads to bad behavioral traits such as anger, low self esteem and confidence, jealousy, depression and many others.
Consuming a nutritious diet leads to maintaining a healthy weight, reduce body fat, provide your body with energy to stay active, promote good sleep and generally make you feel better.
Key components of balanced diet
Early childhood (till the age of 8 years) diet components include milk, protein, starchy food, carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables and dairy foods.
Milk is the best source for calcium which leads to healthy and strong bones. Protein helps in development of brain and muscles. Carbohydrates provide energy for the cells that helps children stay alert and active throughout the day. Fruits and vegetables contain the important vitamins and minerals essential for our body and also boost immunity which helps our body fight diseases. Dairy food are a rich source of calcium and nutrients such as protein, iodine, riboflavin and Vitamin B12.
The calorie intake for children of age 2-3 years is 1,000–1,400 and for children of age 4-8 years is 1,200-2,000 calories depending upon the growth and activity level.
So, we request parents or carers to ensure balanced diet is given to children for consistent growth, improved performance and happiness. Along with balanced diet, children need to sleep well and take parts in reading and sporting activities.
